As a provider who lives with chronic pain, who graduated and has worked as a medical nurse since the height of the "pain as the fifth vital sign" era, I've seen pain care swing from one polar opposite (aggressive pain management with extreme doses of potent opioids) to another (refusal of strong pain medications even in the most severe of pain cases).
Because I understood that there was always more that we caregivers could be doing, I earned my pain management certification in nursing (PMGT-BC) in 2017 and was subsequently re-certified in 2022. This additional training gives me a stronger scientific background in the causes of and treatment for chronic and acute pain. My training specifically focuses on non-opioid medications that modulate pain reception and non-medication complementary and alternative therapies.
I have completed my Medication Assisted Treatment training and am currently working toward being able to prescribe medications for opioid use disorder with a target date July 1, 2023. My family has been personally impacted by substance use disorder and I welcome all clients. Many clients who have untreated or undiagnosed mental health conditions or neurodivergencies find themselves self-medicating due to chronic level of stress associated with these conditions. THIS IS NOT SHAMEFUL. I am happy to work with you in a harm-reduction model to help keep you safe, stabilize your mental health concerns, and bring you to a higher level of function.
